Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy is one of Romania's best-known medical universities for international students. On Medimentor, the relevant Cluj-Napoca routes are Medicine in English and Dental Medicine in English.
The important admissions point is that international English-program applicants are not ranked through a separate Biology or Chemistry entrance exam. The 2026 methodology describes an online application file and a competitive evaluation of school performance and personal achievements.

Best fit

Applicants who want a major Romanian university city, a large international medical community and a file-based route for Medicine or Dental Medicine in English.

English-route scope

UMF Cluj also lists French and Romanian routes, plus Medicine in Novara and Nursing in English. This page focuses on the Cluj-Napoca Medicine and Dental Medicine routes in English.

English-taught programs at UMF Cluj

For the 2026/2027 academic year, UMF Cluj lists 200 English places for Medicine and 100 English places for Dental Medicine. Both are 6-year, 360 ECTS programs. Pharmacy is listed in French, so it is not shown as an English-taught Medimentor route.

Documents

Typical application file

  • Application forms, declaration, GDPR agreement and screening form.
  • CV, letter of intent, high school diploma or equivalent and transcripts.
  • Passport, birth certificate, medical certificate and psychological certificate.
  • Minimum B2 language certificate or accepted proof/exam route.
Language

B2 English requirement

The methodology requires minimum B2 language proof for English/French programs, unless the candidate completed secondary studies in that language or another official exemption applies.

Dossier evaluation, not a subject entrance exam

For international candidates to English and French study programs, UMF Cluj says admission is made by evaluating academic performance and personal achievements. Appendix 4 lists broad criteria such as previous medical or related studies, high-school studies, Biology/Chemistry/Physics baccalaureate subjects, language proof, extracurricular activities and recommendation letters.

No separate Biology/Chemistry exam

International English-program applicants are evaluated by file, so this route is different from exam-heavy Romania options.

Academic file matters

School results, relevant science subjects, previous studies and language proof all need to be clear and well documented.

Results cannot be contested

The 2026 methodology states that selection results cannot be contested.

For Medimentor positioning, UMF Cluj is mostly an application-file strategy page. Students still need Biology and Chemistry knowledge for medical studies, but the admission bottleneck is document quality, timing and route comparison rather than an entrance exam score.

Tuition, fees and living costs

The 2026 international admission page lists EUR 10,000 per year tuition, a EUR 300 non-refundable processing fee and a 50% tuition confirmation fee. Non-EU students need to pay the full first-year tuition to obtain the Romanian type D study visa.

Non-EU visa paymentFull first-year tuitionRequired for the type D study visa according to the 2026 admission page and methodology.
Living costs in Cluj-NapocaApprox. EUR 650-1,000 / monthCluj is one of Romania's more expensive student cities, especially for rent.
Cluj-Napoca is usually a higher-budget choice than smaller Romanian cities. Applicants should also budget for translations, legalization or apostille, medical and psychological certificates, travel, health insurance, residence steps and rent deposits.

Recognition and enrollment conditions

Selection does not automatically guarantee enrollment. The 2026 methodology makes enrollment conditional on presenting original study documents, recognition or equivalence of high-school studies by Romanian authorities, signing the study contract and paying financial obligations. Professional licensing after graduation still depends on the regulator in the country where the graduate wants to practise.

Student life in Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca is a large student city with a strong international community, but also higher housing pressure than many smaller Romanian destinations. UMF Cluj lists student facilities such as the Valeriu Bologa Library, student restaurant, museum, bookshop, sports center and campus map.

International student city

Cluj attracts many international Medicine and Dentistry applicants, so competition and housing planning both matter.

Central medical campus

The university contact address is on Victor Babes Street, close to central Cluj medical and student infrastructure.

How Medimentor helps

UMF Cluj is not an entrance-exam-first route for international English applicants. The strongest prep plan is a clear application file, realistic comparison with exam-based Romanian options and backup routing if the file evaluation is too competitive.

Application-file planning

Check the document list early, especially diploma recognition, translations, medical and psychological certificates.

Deadline control

Choose the right session and avoid last-minute file invalidation on the online platform.

Backup-route comparison

Compare Cluj with Romanian universities that use Biology, Chemistry, Physics, interviews or dossier-only selection.
